Escape From Camp 14 by Blaine Harden is the telling of the life of a North Korean political prisoner who had been born and lived in Camp 14. Camp 14 is one of many prison camps in North Korea. A special thing about Camp 14 is that it is a no exit camp. Which mean no one is ever aloud the leave. Shin was forced to stay in the camps to work off the sins of his parents. His parents had to work off the sins of their siblings. The story follows his life of abuse, torture, and starvation inside the camp which amounted to his escape in his early 20s. I would give this book a 5 out of 5. Though I do admit the book isn't everyones cup of tea it is extremely educational and interesting. It will sadden, anger, and baffle you.

Books I Want to Read
As Jews in German-occupied Holland, the Frank family fears for their lives. When Anne’s sister, Margot, is called to appear before the authorities, which would almost surely mean she was being sent to a concentration camp, Anne and her family go into hiding. They move into a little section of Anne's father's office building that is walled off and hidden behind a swinging bookcase. (http://www.shmoop.com/diary-of-anne-frank/summary.html)
I want to read this book because I know it's a very important. I want to be able to have said I've read the book. Also Anne Frank is the most famous writer from the Holistic. |
I don't know much about this book but I do know it's written by a North Korean director who grew up in North Korea. I want to read this book because I want to read a book from the perspective of what is considered a privileged up bringing in North Korea. I have read books about the Korean War and about life in prison camps but not the life that a normal North Korean lives. This Is Paradise by Hyuk Kang looks very interesting and I hope to get to read it.

Books We Read as a Class
In class we read the book "House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros. The book is about a young girl growing up in a poor neighborhood. The book follows how she grows up and who she becomes. The story is told in a serious of short stories. I liked the book because of the style of writing. I've never seen a book written like this before so it made it more fun to read. I couldn't really connect with the story line and I didn't like how the story line jumped from young to old and back again. So on a 1-10 scale I'd give this book a 5. I liked the writing style and how the was written but I didn't like key factors in the actual story or how it jumped around.
